A soundtrack can make or break a movie. Music sets the tone, brings new meaning to images, draws on your emotions and controls the pace of the film.

It's also a pain in the ass for independent filmmakers. Soundtrack rights for a feature can easily become a five-figure expense, which is more than our total budget.

We established Be The Shoe Music to solve this problem. The goal is to amass a catalogue of songs that we have permission to use in movies.

Thanks to local independent musicians, the project has been an overwhelming success. Our second feature, Salad Daze, was produced with an entirely legitimate soundtrack. As a result, we've been able to sell the film online and bring it to festivals, where it gains more exposure for us and the musicians.

If you have a band, or just play for your own pleasure, and you have something recorded, we want to add you to the Be The Shoe Music Library. We're looking at all genres and explicitly seeking variety.

The Stingrays

Stingrays are masters of everything from their signature melodic pop to hard rock. Their Myspace claims they have no commercial potential, but they're not fooling anyone. Check their first album on iTunes.

Moving Matter

This enigmatic rock/trance group is based in Austin, Texas, where a local student paper describes them as "a band that can truly spread the jam." See for yourself on their MySpace, or buy their music off iTunes.

SunMotel

If you've heard "Favorite Girl," you already know this slick, dirty rockband is an innovative newcomer to the St. Louis music scene. If you haven't, you should check them out on MySpace, CD Baby and iTunes.

John Frischer & The Squares

Chesterfield Arts calls this St. Louis band "fun, fresh, and energized." You can hear them on their website, or buy their music directly from iTunes.

The Yearbooks

The Chicago Sun Times was comparing them to the Byrds when they'd only been around for six months. Not a bad start for a band that wouldn't start recording its first EP for another two months. Hear it for yourself on their MySpace or download from iTunes.

Spoonfed Tribe

iTunes shoppers describe this Texas-based progressive rock band as "amazing musicians." Be The Shoe nonchalantly agrees. See for yourself on MySpace, or just go straight to iTunes.

Consider The Source

They describe themselves as "aggressive, yet serence. Powerful, but honest." Consider the Source is a sci-fi middle eastern funk band that takes mixing genres to a new level. Check them out on MySpace, iTunes, or on their website.

Alex Olsen

Alex is a solo artist who appreciates the power of music "to replicate those little timeless things in life that words cannot describe." He's wrapping up his first album, which you can hear a preview from on his MySpace.

Madahoochi

This award-winning funk-jamband has been playing in St. Louis for more than 10 years, and they just finished their fourth CD. You can find their stuff on their website or MySpace.

Providence

Iconized by a guitar-tree, Providence is an unsigned rock band that describes itself as something "between Ben Folds and Incubus." You can hear what they mean by that on MySpace.

South Jordan

This Bloomington, Indiana pop/rock band formed in March 2008. Their first EP, Only Halfway is now available on iTunes and Amazon MP3. You can join their Facebook fan club.

Steve Chaitman

Steve is a solo artist from Deerfield, Illinois who describes his music as "pretty chill." He just finished his first self-recorded album, The Beautiful Caution. You can hear some of it on his MySpace.

Xode

Hobbyist, computer-generated music sounds hollow, fake, and suitable for an old Gameboy, right? It seems nobody told Xode. These guys have mastered the technique with an authentic, original sound that you can hear on their MySpace.

This Illinois band mixes jam, blues, bluegrass and rock and roll. You can hear some of their work on MySpace.
